Draw Dents Bucks’ Title Challenge

Monday 9th March 2009, 9:14AM GMT.

bucks_logo22A draw was the inevitable result in a poor game at the New Bucks Head, and although it looked like it was going to be 0-0 from the start, a lively last 10 minutes saw the game end 1-1, writes Joe Davies.

The first half was a dour affair with neither side looking anywhere near their best and it was no surprise when the half time whistle went with no goals to note.

However, a double substitution by Bucks boss Rob Smith in the last half-hour livened the game up slightly. Lee Moore and Danny Edwards replaced Phil Trainer and Jon Adams to add a bit of urgency to the Bucks play.

Maybe we should have started the game with Moore and Edwards on the field? It’s easy to say that after the game though, and to be honest no-one can argue with Smith’s decisions lately considering the form we have been in.

We had a few chances to win the game, with Mark Danks going close after being set free by Moore and James Meredith going close a couple of times.

Poor defending allowed Kings Lynn to go-ahead though. A Telford corner was cleared and a King’s Lynn sub raced past the Bucks defence on the counter attack to slot the ball past Ryan Young in goal.

It is easy to say from the sidelines, but King’s Lynn should never have had the opportunity to hit us on the counter from our own corner. The defence should be set up with as many players as are needed to defend.

Carey Bertram, as he has been many times this season, was the Telford saviour when in injury time he turned home from close range after a Moore cross was headed back across goal.

The performance was disappointing for the fans though, especially after the little run we have been on. Maybe some of the players were thinking too far ahead of themselves with the FA Trophy semi final first leg against York City being only a week away.

After this setback though, it is hard to see us winning the title. But we are still having a good season and all is not lost.

The FA Trophy and Setanta Shield are both ours for the taking and we need to battle away in the league and see what happens.

If the worst comes to the worst we have always got the play-offs.
