Dont get carried away by lift

shrewsnewlogotm4Four points in two games has given Town fans a much-needed lift, but it’s hard to get carried away with two consecutive away games around the corner, writes James Pugh.

You couldn’t help feeling disappointed with the 1-1 draw against a tough Exeter side last Tuesday.

After going in front we seemed to back down and made the mistake of thinking one goal was enough. It seemed inevitable that Exeter would get an equaliser – and they did!

It’s fair to say that we were expected to beat Notts County at home on Saturday despite our poor slump in form and confidence seeming to be low among the players.

Although we achieved the right result, we made hard work of it and fans we left biting their nails at the end.

What the performances showed in both games was that fight and passion had retuned among the players and if they can show this away from home, promotion is still not out the question.

I was very critical of the new men, Ashikodi and Worrall, after the embarrassing defeat to Macclesfield, but two games later, I feel they have added something to our side and it was nice to see Ashikodi score his first goal on Saturday. What do fans think of the recent arrivals?

Mr Simpson made a big call last week to replace Davies as captain with Coughlan and I must admit it was a very good call.

Davies can inspire the rest of the team with his performances, but I have never thought he was that vocal on the pitch and I think the pressure of having to captain the side has affected his performances.

Coughlan has been one of our most impressive players this season and has always made his opinions known to other players on the pitch. As captain he will be able to lead from the back and will be able to see more of the game from his position.

Our away form has been poor all season, but two things that we have prided ourselves on have been the solid defence and the number of clean sheets – that is until recently.

Earlier in the season we would take the lead in games and fans would be confident that that would signal a victory, but recently it feels like we could concede at any time.

A lot of this is down to confidence, but in my opinion our defence hasn’t been the same since we lost Tierney who was more than just Mr Reliable.

The 3-2 win on Saturday was made even more vital after other results went against us.

It is still very tight at the top, although there is a gap forming between us and Dagenham, in ninth place.

Automatic promotion is still not out of our reach, but one thing that is for sure is that the end of the season is going to be a rollercoaster with more fans left biting their nails.

Can we finally get the monkey off our back and win away on Tuesday against Aldershot or will we return home empty handed and fans losing faith in our promotion push once again?
