Boxer Joe’s surprise visit
Monday 9th March 2009, 5:59PM GMT.
Sporting legend Joe Calzaghe made a surprise visit to Shropshire this weekend.
Mr Calzaghe, 36, who hasn’t a single blemish on a career spanning 46 fights, was at The Lion Quays Hotel, Oswestry, on Saturday afternoon.
The former BBC Sports Personality of the Year enjoyed lunch at the venue on the A483 near Chirk before heading to Wrexham for an evening function. He was giving a talk at the town’s Glyndwr University that evening about his career.
Mr Calzaghe arrived at the hotel in a personalised blacked out 4×4 with his father and former trainer Enzo Calzaghe and partner Jo-Emma Larvin.
He gained fame and a fearsome reputation by holding the WBO Super Middleweight championship from October 1997 to September 2008, when he relinquished the title to beat Roy Jones Jr in a light heavyweight contest in Madison Square Garden, New York.
Mr Calzaghe, who announced his retirement from the sport last month, said he was “tired” and was going to sleep at the hotel before heading to Wrexham.
Nick Dulson, proprietor of the Lion Quays, said: “It was fantastic to have Joe Calzaghe here and it raises the profile of Oswestry and Shropshire.
“I follow boxing a bit and Joe Calzaghe is one of the best ever. It was an honour to have him here.”
