Customers were able to enjoy face painting and food tastings as well as talks by local historian David Trumper.

They were also given goodie bags and celebratory bucks fizz while staff dressed up in costumes to mark the ten decades of M&S in Shrewsbury town centre.

Maureen Cowell, 61, who has worked at the store for 40 years, took part in the celebrations.

She said: “I just really enjoy working here. I work down on the lingerie department. I enjoy talking to all the customers one-on-one.

“It is lovely to celebrate 100 years. I have seen a lot of changes here.”

Customer Anthea Millington, 33, of Minsterley, who was shopping in the store today, said it was a lovely idea to mark the milestone.

She said: “It’s brilliant the store has been here for 100 years. I shop here often and we tend to use the food department a lot. The staff look really good all dressed up.”

Betty Rowley, 73, of Coleham, also joined in the celebrations at the store.

“I worked here for 24 years and I retired when I was 58-years-old and I worked in the food department. It was a very good firm to work for and I came today to see them cut the ribbon.”

Stephanie Cresswell, store manager, said: “It’s quite an achievement to reach 100 years.”
