Jackson hoping for early return

Experienced Shrewsbury Town defender Mike Jackson could be back in training in as little as four weeks, after undergoing surgery on a cartilage injury.
The former Blackpool skipper had been ruled out for the rest of the season, but boss Paul Simpson today issued a slightly more positive bulletin on his condition.
Jackson has already resumed his rehabilitation programme after going under a surgeon’s knife earlier in the week.
“Jacko’s had a damaged cartilage removed and it should make it a quicker recovery than having it repaired,” said Simpson, whose side were entertaining Notts County at the Prostar Stadium today.
“Nathan (Ring, the club physio) went into the operation with him and there was a big tear in there.
“He’s out of hospital and he’s started his rehab straight away – they want him on his feet.
“They’ve said he’ll need six-to-eight weeks of rehabilitation, but I think, with the sort of character he is, that he’ll be looking to get back in four-to-six.
“He’s a fit lad and a fantastic worker and I’m sure he’ll be looking to get back as soon as possible.”
Jackson’s absence has handed a chance to Kelvin Langmead to stake a claim for a regular place once again, having lost his shirt to Jackson.
The striker-turned-centre-back was heavily criticised by his manager for his display in the 3-0 defeat at Macclesfield last Saturday but responded with a much-improved showing in the 1-1 midweek draw with Exeter.
“I was really pleased with Kelvin last Tuesday,” added Simpson.
“He had a tough afternoon at Macclesfield last Saturday and some things were said that I’m sure he wasn’t very happy about, but all I wanted was a response.”
l Shrewsbury’s youngsters entertain Rushden & Diamonds in the Midland Youth Cup semi-final at the Prostar on Monday at 7pm.
