Vodafone in fourth mast bid

Friday 6th March 2009, 6:00PM GMT.

Mobile phone giant Vodafone wants to put up a fourth telecommunications mast in Shrewsbury – despite major protests against previous applications.

Councillor Miles Kenny, who represents the Underdale area, has received a letter from Vodafone stating their plans to put up a mast near Crowmere Roundabout, by Millennium Gardens.

The company also wants to put up masts in Clive Road, Monkmoor, and in Copthorne Road.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council refused an application to install a 10-metre mast in Bank Farm Road under delegated powers last year, but the decision is currently being examined by the Secretary of State.

Councillor Kenny said Vodafone should reconsider the location for the latest proposal.

He said: “I am going to see residents this evening and tomorrow to see what they think. Vodafone says it has looked elsewhere for suitable locations but has rejected other options.

“This location is near a roundabout which is part of the Pride of Britain scheme so it’s a public landmark.

“I have heard the reception is very poor but it’s rather intriguing why they need so many masts.”

Dr Rob Matthews, EMF advisory unit manager for Vodafone, said the aim was to improve 3G coverage.

He said: “The proposed base station at Crowmere Roundabout is part of a number of base stations that will achieve that goal.

“We have recently started our pre-application consultation to explain the proposal to local stakeholders and have sent letters to the local planning authority, local councillors and nearby residents.”

Maybe Cllr Kenny could come up with a location for a mast himself. How about in a field in the middle of nowhere so that the current poor coverage doesn’t improve?
