Smith tells fans to shout out

Friday 6th March 2009, 1:35PM GMT.

rob-smith-21Boss Rob Smith is urging AFC Telford United’s loyal fans to crank up the volume in tomorrow’s Blue Square North showdown with King’s Lynn.

Telford have scored nine goals in their last two games, at home to Vauxhall Motors (a 5-1 win) and away at Hyde (4-0).

But Smith expects the Linnets to provide a sterner challenge at the New Bucks Head tomorrow – and recalls the intimidating atmosphere they encountered during their 1-1 draw at King’s Lynn in January.

“Theirs was the most partisan crowd we’ve had against us all season,” he recalled.

“They were pretty vociferous behind our dugout and it would be nice for our fans to turn up the volume tomorrow and show them what a real crowd is like.

“The club had a bad home record when we (Smith and assistant Larry Chambers) came in but we thought we could turn it in our favour.

“When the atmosphere gets going at the New Bucks Head, it’s brilliant.”

The Bucks enter the game in third place and Smith believes they need to be looking to take maximum points from tomorrow’s clash and Tuesday’s trip to Vauxhall Motors.

That would certainly keep them in the hunt as they look to close the gap to the top two, Gateshead and Tamworth.

“We’ve got six points to play for in the next four days and we need those points – Gateshead may be in a strong position now but they’ve got some tough games coming up,” added Smith.

“We have to do our bit and, who knows, we might only be three points behind by Tuesday night – then the pressure is really on. The league is our main focus and the players are under no illusions about that.”

Striker Danny Carey-Bertram is rated as 50/50 for tomorrow’s game due to a niggling ankle injury, while Andy Brown will have a pre-match fitness test after coming through training unscathed last night.
