Council tax rise is lowest for a decade

People in Telford face their lowest council tax rise in more than a decade.
Telford & Wrekin Council has agreed one of its lowest ever increases in council tax, by driving through more efficiencies to help residents facing the effects of the credit crunch.
Council tax for Telford & Wrekin Council services will from April go up by 2.5 per cent – equivalent to an increase of 40p a week for the average household in the borough.
It is the smallest rise the council has set for more than a decade and below the current rate of inflation of three per cent.
Higher increases from police, fire and parishes raise the overall bill increase to an average 2.9 per cent.
Councillor Andrew Eade, council leader, said: “Like our residents, this council must make less go further and find more and new ways to be leaner and more efficient and we will continue to focus on this.
“But we also must continue to invest in services.”
The borough budget was unanimously backed at a meeting of the full council yesterday.

That’s good news. I bet it goes at double the rate of increase from last years next year, to make up for it though.

Great news – but why can’t Telford do the same as Shropshire and not impose any increase! With the country being in recession there should have been a decrease if anything (not that i ever think that would happen!).

So here we are… in the depths of a recession, Billions being pumped into the banking system, businesses closing left right and centre, and ..
WHAT do councils do … well… put UP council tax !!!!!
LETS just repeat that again …
A RISE IN COUNCIL TAX!!!!
It may be a smaller rise than of late, but lets just remind ourselves just how much this disgraceful tax has risen since its inception.
The fact that the tax has gone up at all, instead of being reduced is unforgiveable.

not good enough, we want zero as a max, we want to reverse council taxlike tory authorities in london have done, lets cut taxes for the sake of the economy, only a conservative council will cut taxes, get the liberal loony left out now and cut taxes for all especially clown browns awful 45 p in the pound for the upper band

its not good enough, the least i could accept is Zero, inflation is negative at the moment for god sake, yet all these public sector staff teachers, cleaners bin men etc get 3% pay rise EVERY YEAR!! Its not fair, its my money, and im struggling in a tough private sector job, i would love to see them all sacked so they could work a day in my shoes and have no pension at the end of it, that would teach them about real life

look tory boy, the council is tory in telford you moron, so you are putting up taxes for people, you silly silly man, grow up and stop demonising hard working public servants, you try sweeping the streets all day or dealing with mad customers at a job centre and dealing with screaming kids all day in a school
see if you think thats a cushy public sector job

I would’ve been lower had the tories not voted for an increase in allowances.
