Carpet store in Newtown move

Friday 6th March 2009, 1:15PM GMT.

One of Europe’s leading carpet stores has announced plans to move into Newtown.

And there are hopes it could take over the former Woolworths store in Broad Street which has been empty since January 6.

Carpetright, which describes itself as “Europe’s leading specialist carpet and floor covering retailer” already has 500 stores across the UK and Ireland.

Lindsay Noton, Carpetright spokeswoman, said: “I can confirm we are looking into taking up a site in Newtown, but we’re not in a position to say where at the moment.”

One local businessman, who did not wish to be named, said: “I’ve heard from a good source Carpetright will be taking over the former Woolworths store. I think it’s brilliant someone has shown an interest in coming to the town.”

Councillor Russell George, Powys County Council member for Newtown Central, said: “I have heard Carpetright is coming to the former Woolworths store in Newtown but wasn’t sure if the rumour was true or not.

“I think it’s great more jobs will be coming to the town.”

oh dear is this the best that can happen to Woolies old store. Do we really need another carpet store in Newtown, no!!!!!!! What we do need is a store selling children’s clothes as Woolies used to. Travel to the cities is required at the moment to purchase most chcildren’s clothes.

So no to a carpet shop, uggggggggh!
