999 staff remain suspended
Friday 6th March 2009, 5:00PM GMT.
Control room staff from Shropshire’s fire headquarters remain suspended nearly a month after an investigation was launched – despite calls for the action to be dealt with quickly.
Personnel based at the headquarters in St Mich-ael’s Street, Shrewsbury, were suspended as part of an internal disciplinary investigation on February 9.
The reasons behind the suspensions and investigations are unknown.
Deputy chief fire officer Paul Raymond has said no information is being given out because it involved “confidential” personnel issues.
But Alan Tranter, of the Fire Officers’ Association, has now spoken to the fire service calling for action to be taken.
He said: “I have ex-changed information with the head of human resources expressing my concern about the time this is taking.
“They were in need of obtaining some further documents which I have helped to facilitate.
“I recognise the investigation is complicated by the number of people that the investigation team have had to look at but we are concerned that we have people who are still suspended.”
Mr Tranter said: “They are public servants and they should be at work.”
The Fire Brigades Union has declined to comment on the numbers of staff suspended or the reasons behind it, in case it hampered the investigation. It is understood up to five people have been suspended.
