Lloyd-Webber proud to back festival
Thursday 5th March 2009, 9:50AM GMT.
A festival celebrating the life and work of Shropshire composer and conductor Sir Edward German promises audiences “hours of wonderful music”, its celebrity backer said today.
Julian Lloyd-Webber has spoken of his pride at being the presiding patron of the festival, which will be held at venues in Whitchurch from April 23 to 28.
The festival will celebrate the wealth of music written for the stage by the musician who was born in Whitchurch in 1862.
Mr Lloyd-Webber said: “There is a wealth of good music remaining unheard and unplayed.
“Regrettably the majority of Edward German’s music now falls into that category so it is completely appropriate that his birthplace of Whitchurch should be hosting another German Festival.
“I am proud to be its patron and having seen this year’s programme I know that you will enjoy many hours of wonderful music making.
“We hope many visitors will visit this little corner of Shropshire and enjoy this festival combining the talents of the community with those of world class musicians.”
This year’s festival features performances by Hallé, Emma Johnson and John Lenehan, The Central Band of the Royal Air Force and The National Festival Orchestra.
A concert version of Sir Edward’s operetta Merrie England will also be performed.
