Gunnell looking ahead
Thursday 5th March 2009, 12:34PM GMT.
Shropshire’s Adrian Gunnell today looked ahead to a summer of change after his nightmare run continued with an early exit from the World Snooker Championships, writes JAMES GARRISON.
The 36-year-old was beaten 10-2 by Lee Spick in the penultimate qualifying round of the biggest tournament on the calender.
Most of the damage was done in Tuesday’s first session at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield as Gunnell trailed 7-2, before Spick – who now meets Steve Davis next week for a place at the Crucible – administered the final rites yesterday.
“It was soul-destroying,” said Gunnell. “I made a bad start which I’m doing in every game and didn’t recover.
“I had chances to make it 4-3 at one stage and should have won a frame to go to 6-3 instead of being 7-2 overnight.
“But within five minutes of the match finishing I felt a million times better and as though a huge weight had lifted off my shoulders.
“I’ve been struggling since November and now I can put in some really good work over the summer.
“I’ve got five months until my next tournament so I’m going to strip everything down and start from scratch.”
