Money thrown at banks, not POs

Wednesday 4th March 2009, 9:29AM GMT.

INDUSTRY Post 2LETTER: For those of us who are opposed to further privatisation of the postal service, the latest proposals from the Government is somewhat of a dog’s breakfast.

For the real answer to the question of privatisation is not why, but when, for it will happen either way, under the Brown government or its Tory successor.

While Mandelson tells us other postal services in Europe generate profit, he fails to understand that European postal costs are up to 100 per cent higher than that of the UK.

No doubt, in order to generate bids, he may well allow pricing flexibility, which is currently denied to the UK service.

Adam Crozier, the Government-appointed chief executive, pleads for foreign equity capital despite the grave warnings.

We are now faced with a situation where the Royal Bank of Scotland is nationalised and the Post Office is privatised, and I fail to understand how a Labour Government can throw billions at banks, but turn their backs on a service the public hold in great esteem.
