Mayor’s vow on tourism

Wednesday 4th March 2009, 1:31PM GMT.

Councillors in Machynlleth have pledged to do all they can to replace the town’s tourist information centre.

Three jobs are set to be lost when the centre (TIC) in Machynlleth shuts at the end of March.

The closure comes after Powys County Council failed to find a new partner to take over the running of the centre in Heol Maengwyn, following a restructuring of its tourism services.

Town mayor Councillor Bob Dunn has now promised to do all he can to find a replacement centre.

He said: “The news came as a major blow for the town and we are all sad three jobs are going to be lost, especially during the current economic climate.

“I was hoping to set up an information point in the town council’s offices at the Plas, where people will still be able to access all the tourist information they need.

“But at the moment we need funding and we as a town council just haven’t got enough money in our budget to set this service up.

“We need to approach Powys County Council and ask them if money can be made available and we need to start acting now before the tourism season begins in a few months time.

Councillor Michael Williams, county council member for Machynlleth, said the closure was a “massive blow” to the town. He said: “This has come as a shock to the town because it is the very time when we need a centre of this nature.”
