Let’s have the Bishops’ Castle Nuclear Power Plant, Now! campaign!
Their slogan would be: “What do we want?” “Nuclear power!” “Where do we want it?” “NIMBY!”
sounds like a good green plan good for the economy good for the planet what is the problem of these nimbys. BC is outside the AONB so its the only place farmers in the AONB can bring stuff for processing to add value, really Bishops Castle is a sacrifice area to enable the whole of the south of shropshire to be pretty, bit like telford is for shrewsbury

I care very deeply about the air being kept clean in rural areas…thats why we choose to live in the countryside. Only very evil people would want to contaminate pure air. Some things can be sacrifised…good air is not one of them…we all need to breath. Solar power in each home and windmills is a much better way of going green.

99.9% of the community are against this proposal for very good reasons, the 0.01% for it are just paid skivvies of the developers!!!
If Miss Bavastock feels that “virtually the whole community opposed the project” how does she explain why only 50 people turned out to protest?
Looking at the photographs published here, there is no evidence that 50 people were there protesting – even if you include the young children and the policeman. (why were the children not in school anyway).
From my reading of the proposals I can only see that the plant would have a positive impact on the community.

Its a good idea, just do it. NIMBY’s

oh dear, there appears to be alot of Misinformation surrounding the proposed Biomass project! There was a small demonstration at the community college on Saturday 28th February, around 50 people attended,I know this because I was amoung them!I also attended the public enquiry 3rd March where there was easily over 200 people Against the Biomass! One fact that I did learn was that over 50% of Residents from Bishops Castle are against the whole project!

Claire – whether the number at the inquiry was 50 or 200 does not matter this does not equate to “over 50% of the residents”. The population of the town is over 1600 people of whom 90% did not turn out to protest thereby suggesting that they do not give a damn about this development.

Luddite – One who opposes technical or technological change.
Some people would have us all living in caves.

Although not a complete Technophile!I am all for sustainable technology. If I may mention I am also entitled to voice my opinion!I am however adverse to IGNORANCE-The condition of being Uneducated,Unaware,Uninformed!

Claire – you are correct in that you are entitled to an opinion as is everybody else. That is why a forum such as this exists.
However, your opinion is not supported by the facts. A tiny proportion of Bishop’s Castle population attended the inquiry (and many of them were children)so mathematically, statistically and practically your statement that “over 50% of Residents from Bishops Castle are against the whole project” does not stack up and is not supported by the facts.

So Kyros-Perry-Garratt wants clean air in rural areas, well the panic over this installation when weighed against other emissions from vehicles, house fires and intensive agricultural sites is farcical. Your comment about windmills and solar panels for every house is equally laughable

Please click on the following link: Biomass Meetings to view the notes from previous meetings and the responses received from the Biomass Power company to the questions posed by the College.
A public enquiry into the proposed Bishop’s Castle Biomass Plant will be held from March 3rd, 2009. Details can be found by clicking on the link above.
A ballot of opinion regarding the building of a Biomass plant at the Crowgate site amongst students, staff and parents/carers was held by the governing body last week and had the following results:
Against: Students 93; Parents 42; Staff 23
Don’t know: Students 40; Parents 7; Staff 5
For: Students 11; Parents 5; Staff 3
Thank you to all who voted for participating.

Just looked up the website to get the background on the proposed Station and its a 2.5MW capacity site enough for 2500 houses in Bishops Castle and will provide a heat main for the local communities all sounds pretty good to me?

one wonders how much damage is being done to the ozone layer by the 2 breweries in bishops castle. i think we should be told

Firstly I`d like to misinform the many misinformed here – please read the following, which was published in the Shropshire Star in June 2007:
Biomass burner not good
I refer to Mr Kerswell’s letter, published in the Shropshire Star on June 7, in which he refers to the proposed incinerator in Bishop’s Castle. His letter contains much misinformation.
He refers to “green lobbyists” claiming that Bishop’s Castle had the poorest air quality in Britain.
Though I am not aware of such a statement, I feel he must be referring to the phenomena called atmospheric inversion. Due to Bishops Castle’s geography, air is trapped for several days at a time in the town and surrounding area and thus any emissions are trapped also.
I am sure he must recognise that burning 20,000 plus tonnes of a variety of materials and putting the emissions into such an environment is undesirable.
This “clean burn biomass plant” will emit by-products of sulphur, chlorine and nitrogen, but particularly worrisome are what are known as particulates, one of which is called dioxin.
Dioxin causes various kinds of cancer and the discharge of these micro-particles will settle over an area beneath which is the aquifer which supplies Bishop’s Castle and district with water. These particles must in time find their way down to the water table.
Incidentally, these same dioxins will be settling on pastureland currently being grazed by dairy herds.
However, Mr Kerswell seeks to reassure us all is well, because the incinerator “will be subjected to rigorous emission standards by the Environment Agency”.
There will be only two tests a year, and for just six hours on each occasion.

Iam moving back into the area and am deeply concerned about the whole BIOMASS project effecting our clean country air(one of the reasons my family wish to return). I do not think that the term “luddite” is correct for someone caring about their environment unless they have expressed total disregard for technology!

luddites, they should bring back hanging for socialists like them, standing in the way of development in a recession and all , SHAME ON THEM and their anti business, pro green, lefty loony greeny socialist agenda

I live near bishops castle for a certain way of life. Its clean and peaceful ,with a community feel where people care.I do not even see this biomass incinerator as acceptable ,because in a little town, with children walking freely and safely, and a school right by the proposed site,it would” fit”.If you lived here you would know the quite roads, and you would also fully recognise that to have many lorries passing through and by the school daily, would be a hazzard for us all and especially the children.
Bishops castle is a town that embraces green ways of producing energy, but many are not happy with the biomass idea.Surely that speaks volumes.?
I have seen and read statistics of biomass incinerators already in use in europe at present, and they are not quite what we are led to believe..ie;they do produce fumes and toxic air.Bishops castle is in a valley, and that is the main concern for all. That the burning will produce fumes that get caught up in the valley, over us all,let alone what it could do to the wildlife.Need i say more..
I am not looking for a reply to my message or to be called a luddite(judgement ).Just to voice my heart felt feelings..thank you..sarah ..

i support the development

It comes as no surprise to me that those who support this development resort to personal abuse rather than rational arguement. THIS IS INVARIABLY THE CASE. If those who critcise the objectors had taken the trouble to invest the thousands of hours which Bishops Castle Group members have in carefully studying the proposal they might come to the same conclusions but they have not. As is the case in so many walks of life ignorance leads swiftly to abuse.
The issues involved are highly complex technical matters involving a detailed understanding both of the physical properties of the plant the regulatory frame work and the interaction with the local environment.
Already as a result of the process the proposals have been refined with firstly the water useage being reduced by 90%, The proposal for conditions concerning the emmisions of particlates and NOx tightened. Conditions relating to noise are also being tuned to protect residents. A better standard of filtration has also been proposed.
When objectors are accused of being anti business it is clear that the vast majority of local businesses oppose the scheme. The area relies heavily on tourism and there are great fears for the future of that cornerstone of the rural economy.
There are about 900 addresses in the town and letters of objection, well argued and independant arose from over 400 of them and on a normal working day the turnout for the first day of the Inquiry was in excess of 250. The attendance for the following two days never seemed to fall below 100 and many of the attendeess also quized the appelants witnesses with detaied and probing questions.
It is also worth reflecting that the similar plant at Ecclesshal has been operating in breach of the levels of particulate emmissions for the last 12 months and has been issued with a revocation notice which means that as of the 1st March it has no Permit.
I would be gratefull if I heard less abuse and by the by perhaps the name callers would identify themselves as I and my colleauges always do,
Yours openly, Michael Dawes

I know Bishops Castle from younger days. My wife makes better ‘Home-Brew’ English beer than the ones sold in your local Pub!
However, The Biomass Project, How many people in disagreement own Computers and have access to Broadband?
There is a wealth of information on the various types and the fuels they use. “GOOGLE IT”.
The ones mentioned in the “STAR” do not seem to illustrate this.
Both Party’s need to be aware of sharing full knowledge before Manning the Barricades.
