Homes plan for play area
Tuesday 3rd March 2009, 11:45AM GMT.
Land used as a play area by dozens of youngsters in Welshpool could be turned into a housing development, councillors have warned.
Welshpool Town Council members fear the land in the town’s Oldford Estate could be turned into housing, despite it being one of a few areas in the estate for youngsters to play.
Councillor Phil Pritchard said he would do everything in his power to stop the land between the town’s Scansis pitch and Powis Estate’s showground from being built on.
He said the Clwyd Alun Housing Association, which manages the estate, was planning to submit an application for a number of new homes.
Councillor Hazel Evans, who lives on the estate, said without the pitch children would be left having to play in roads.
She said: “There are hundreds of houses there and youngsters who desperately need more space to play on. I think the children need a voice and we should be their voice.”
Deiniol Evans, from Pennaf Housing Group, which includes Clwyd Alyn Housing Association, said: “We have reviewed the existing plans to develop this land and we are currently in the process of submitting two separate new applications for housing in the area.”
