Whitehead so proud as Bucks hit treble trail
Saturday 28th February 2009, 11:44AM GMT.
Skipper Stuart Whitehead has backed AFC Telford United to achieve “the greatest season” in the club’s history.
Whitehead led the side to victory at Southport on Tuesday to set up a two-legged FA Trophy semi-final with York City.
They were today heading to Hyde to try to maintain their Blue Square North promotion push and also have a Setanta Shield northern area final at Barrow on Tuesday evening.
“The feeling is one of immense pride,” said Whitehead. “Everyone connected with the club is passionate.
“The drive goes from the chairman through the players, the supporters and the management – there is a huge will to win.
“We’re still firing on three fronts and it could turn into the greatest season in Telford’s history. Now we just have to produce and make sure that happens.”
The biggest threat to Telford’s treble trophy assault is their ever-increasing fixture backlog – and the problem has now got so severe that they weill play eight games in 22 April days, including a run of four games in nine days.
The Southport victory needed a replay, forcing another postponement, and a further game has had to be shifted to accomodate the semi-finals.
The home game with Redditch has been moved forward a day and will now be played on Good Friday, April 10 (7.45pm).
Farsley Celtic will be the visitors to the New Bucks Head on Wednesday, April 15, while the Bucks will host Burscough on Tuesday, April 21.
Telford’s hectic April in full: Saturday 4th Gainsbourough (a), Tuesday 7th Harrogate (h), Friday 10th Redditch (h), Monday 13th Alfreton (a), Wednesday 15th Farsley Celtic (h), Saturday 18th Southport (a), Tuesday 21st Burscough (h), Saturday 25th Tamworth (h).
* The Bucks are running a supporters’ coach to Barrow on Tuesday. For bookings, call the club office on 01952-640064 or Rob Palin on 07966-935534.
