Two rescued from fire at house
Saturday 28th February 2009, 10:55AM GMT.
Two adults and two dogs were rescued by firefighters today after a house fire near Newport.
The blaze broke out at Mentone Crescent in Edgmond shortly before 11.30am.
The fire started in a bedroom at the two-storey, semi-detached house forcing emergency services to close the road while the blaze was tackled.
Crews from Newport and Telford, along with the incident commander from Shrewsbury, were called to the fire. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said one patient was taken to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.
A spokesman for Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “It was a fire involving a bedroom of a two-storey semi-detached house.
“Four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets were in use. Two adults and two dogs were led to safety by fire service personnel.
“One male adult was suffering from smoke inhalation.”
A spokesman for Telford police said officers were called to the scene but a police investigation was not needed.
He said the road was closed off for health and safety reasons while the fire was dealt with.
Crews from Newport remained at the scene this afternoon while a fire investigation was carried out.
