Tramway scheme is shown to public

Saturday 28th February 2009, 10:50AM GMT.

Plans to restore a disused tramway near Oswestry and create a major new tourist attraction were set to be unveiled to the public today.

Members of the Glyn Valley Tramway Trust have organised a “public visioning and consultation” day at two different locations to let people see what their future plans are.

Trust members have worked to clear the disused tramway line as part of their plans for a heritage railway from Chirk to Glyn Ceiriog.

They say the rail line will be a tourism boost to Chirk and would also celebrate the history of the tramway, which ran until 1935.

The consultation was set to run today from 10am to noon at the parish rooms in Chirk before moving on to the Canolfan Centre in Glyn Ceirog between 2pm and 4pm.

Enthusiasts behind the plan hope to lodge a planning application in April for the building of a section of the line from Chirk to Pontfaen.

Future plans will see the line continue from Pontfaen all the way into the valley and onto Glyn Ceiriog.

David Cooper, trust spokesman, said: “Things are progressing and we have cleared down more than a mile to Pontfaen from Chirk.

“Our next step will be for planning approval to put a line in there, but that all depends on our public consultation exercise. We need to know what the public think of our plans.

“If we get the support we could lodge a planning application in April.”
