Simpson warns of financial prudence

Saturday 28th February 2009, 11:44AM GMT.

simpson_paul_papic1Boss Paul Simpson has backed Shrewsbury Town’s policy of financial prudence – and pointed to cash-strapped Darlington as proof of why that is necessary.

Town did not splash the cash during the transfer window, with all their new arrivals coming for free or on loan.

One target – striker Liam Hatch – went to Darlington instead, but the Quakers this week went into administration and had 10 points deducted.

Luton, Rotherham and Bournemouth all started the season on minus points and Simpson says the message is loud and clear that spending beyond your means can only lead to trouble.

“You don’t want to see anybody struggling in that way and it’s unfortunate but I think it’s just a bit of a wake-up call for everybody,” said the Shrewsbury chief.

“When people are clamouring for the club to go and break transfer records and why didn’t we go and sign this player or that player – there is the reason why.

“The football club is being run in a very, very sensible way.

“The chairman (Roland Wycherley) is desperate for success – but we also want to keep the football club going for years to come.”
