Play area for adults ‘still top priority’

Saturday 28th February 2009, 10:54AM GMT.

A play area for adults, which would be the first of its kind in Shropshire, is a top priority and could help to reduce anti-social behaviour and vandalism in the area, it was vowed today.

Councillors in Minsterley have been trying for a number of months to push forward on the project for a £5,000 play area, which would be built especially for adults and teenagers.

So far funding has not been secured, but applications have been lodged and Minsterley Parish Council is hopeful it could get still it installed in the near future.

Louise Walsgrove, clerk of the parish council, said: “The proposed installation of the exercise equipment adjacent to the playground is still top of the council’s priorities.

“Applications for funding have been sent out and I am hopeful that they will be met with success. This initiative has been met with considerable interest so the council is confident that it is the right thing to do.

“Research from parish councils that have installed this type of equipment shows it has greatly reduced incidents of anti-social behaviour that can sometimes lead to mindless vandalism. Minsterley does not have much of a problem but we can at least provide our young adults with somewhere to go.”

It was recently revealed the project had been hampered because three separate bids for funding have been refused, but the parish council has not let this stop its ambitions.

The ‘biggest waste of money ever’? £5000 is not a huge amount of money, you know. Using 2007 prices, it covers the annual cost of 51 streetlights.

If teenagers are going to hang around in childrens play parks (and they do) why not provide them with one of their own, clearing the former area for its proper use. Seems like a very good idea to me!

no doubt the council is run by labour loony left to waste public money on such a pointless activity, if people want to get fit, let them join a private gym, its not a public problem

I agree that this is sort of a reward for bad behaviour but i bet councils spend more than that cleaning up after yobs as it is at the moment and if it gets the teens somewhere other than the park my young children go to then hell yeah bring it on as i don’t really enjoy spending 30 mins of a weekend picking up broken glass b4 my kids can have some fun.
