New bid to create a square for town
Saturday 28th February 2009, 5:59PM GMT.
Council bosses are expected to draw up plans for a brand new town square in Wem.
North Shropshire District Council has earmarked cash to buy the town’s lorry park, currently on the main car park off High Street, with the intention of creating a new public square.
The money has come from a £7 million cashpot the authority raised through the sale of its council houses.
Eileen Molloy, from the district council, said the council was carrying out a consultation on the idea.
She said a town square was due to be built five to six years ago as part of a scheme which would also have seen the creation of a new business centre, but it collapsed when funders Advantage West Midlands pulled out.
“It’s one of those projects that’s been around since about 2003 or 2004. It was part of a bigger regeneration project, and North Shropshire District Council has agreed to buy the lorry park,” she said.
“I hope it will be a benefit to the town, and it’s all part of the regeneration of the town centre and High Street.”
Miss Molloy added the council was now looking to relocate the lorry park, and is considering the council car park at New Street.
Peggy Carson, Wem town councillor, said: “We have to look forward to anything that improves Wem, we’ve been lacking for years now.
“I’d like to see a bandstand put there so we could have bands at the weekend and liven the town up a bit.”
