MP calls for more police on the street
Saturday 28th February 2009, 5:59PM GMT.
Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard today called for more police to patrol the streets of Wellington in a bid to combat pickpockets and street attacks.
The Tory MP said he has written to Chief Superintendent Peter Robinson, divisional commander of Telford police, calling on the force to “allocate more police resources” in Wellington.
He said the officers were needed to “deal with a rising number of pickpockets, street assaults and shoplifting incidents”.
Mr Pritchard said: “Wellington retailers have enough challenges already. What they don’t need is some customers staying away because they feel afraid to shop in the town.”
His calls come after an elderly man was targeted by pickpockets.
Mr Pritchard added: “I am calling on senior officers to authorise a special operation to catch the offenders. Additional resources may be required but action must be taken.”
