Warning over pickpockets

Friday 27th February 2009, 12:35PM GMT.

A pensioner was targeted by pickpockets as he was out shopping in Wellington, sparking fears that it could be the start of a mini crime spree. The man believes the thieves were women.

The elderly man was out shopping in the market town when he realised possessions in his pocket were being stolen from his coat at noon yesterday.

The thieves escaped before he could stop them.

Constable Pete Simmonds, spokesman for Telford police today warned people to be on their guard against such opportunist thieves.

He said gangs often moved from town to town across counties, targeting vulnerable people including pensioners, by stealing their wallets and personal items.

Mr Simmonds said: “At about midday yesterday an elderly man reported items being stolen from his coat pocket whilst shopping in Wellington.

“It would appear that pickpockets are on the prowl and the only description we currently have for this incident is that those believed responsible were women.

“Historically these events have involved women who are described as having a dark skinned appearance.

“These women usually engage an older person in conversation before picking their pocket.”
