Town step closer to lighting

Friday 27th February 2009, 11:18AM GMT.

lightbulbA Mid Wales town is a step closer to having its street lights switched back on.

Powys County Council has been heavily criticised for switching off more than half of its 14,000 lights in a bid to save £225,000, but it has now started a part-night lighting scheme.

The five Powys County Council members in Newtown are now in the process of reviewing which lights in their ward should be switched to part-night lighting.

Councillors Russell George, Bob Mills, Frank Torrens, Richard White and Peter Harris are in discussions.

Welshpool is in the process of having its lights turned back on this week, with Newtown’s expected to be turned on by the end of March.

Councillor George said: “I think they will be switched back on between 4.30pm and 12.30am.”
