Pay a pound to spend a penny
Friday 27th February 2009, 11:54AM GMT.
It seems budget airline Ryanair is prepared to plumb any depths to make a fast buck, writes blogger Carl Jones
The latest wheeze from boss Michael O’Leary is to charge folk for using the toilets on board. Spend a penny, but pay a pound.
Is this the same airline industry which has been battering us with the message that we must drink copious quantities of water to remain healthy on a flight.
Perhaps now we know why . . . Ryanair can double its money on bottled water sales by charging us again when we are ready to recycle it.
What’s next? Charging by the minute for “aisle time” for those who want to stretch their legs and avoid a case of DVT? A free pint of tap water for everyone on board to get their waterworks swilling?
This is a sad case of the line being crossed, with profitmaking ruthlessly put before the comfort of customers.
But it could well backfire. Charging people to go to the toilet might make travellers think twice before buying the overpriced drinks on board.
And you have to say, it would serve Ryanair right.

What with luggage restrictions, paying to use the toilet. What’s next, weighing the passengers and charging by the kilo? I will not be flying with Ryanair again.
