New recruits push for chance

paul-simpson-smile1Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Simpson completed his mini shake-up today by tying up the signing of Moses Ashikodi – and the striker could go straight into the squad for tomorrow’s match at Macclesfield.

The 21-year-old, who struck twice in in Town reserves’ 5-0 victory over Sheffield United on Wednesday night, has penned a deal until the end of the season.

And Ashikodi is not the only fresh face as Town launch a latest bid to cure their travel sickness with new signing David Worrall also in contention for a first appearance.

“Moses came training with us two weeks ago and we’ve decided to take a bit of a chance on him,” said Simpson.

“He’s different to what we already have and he might be on the bench tomorrow, we’ll see.

“He’s had some scrapes in the past but from everything I’ve seen and heard he seems that have realised that he needs to knuckle down to stay in football.”

Attacking midfielder Worrall, signed on a one month’s loan from West Bromwich Albion earlier this week, was kept out of the reserve game midweek to give him the chance to train with the first-term squad. Whether Worrall earns a start remains to be seen, but manager Paul Simpson has confirmed there will be changes as Town seek a first away League victory since August 16.

“There will be changes this weekend because I think it needs a bit of freshening up,” continued Simpson. “I’ve been impressed with David Worrall coming into the club. He is a bright footballer and has great energy about him.

“He has trained with the first team and doesn’t look out of place.”

Darren Moss is available again after suspension while Shane-Cansdell Sherriff is back in contention as Neil Ashton has got a badly bruised foot.

Town are also waiting on the fitness of defender Mike Jackson, who is struggling with knee and ankle niggles, but Nick Chadwick has returned to training.

Macclesfield have not won in seven matches and have already been beaten nine times at home this season.

But Simpson is aware his side must turn their away record around if they are to maintain their promotion push. “We have got to go and convert the chances and also be tighter defensively for us to make the most of the other teams around us slipping up,” he added.
