Dolls will help childcare lessons

A set of interactive “babies” that starkly show the effects of drug and alcohol abuse on foetuses has been bought by a Shropshire college to raise awareness of what the unborn can suffer.
The £5,000 set of nine dolls bought by Shrewsbury College also includes a “shaken baby” to highlight how easily violence can cause brain damage.
Tutor Teresa Spiers said: “We will use these interactive babies extensively in our childcare courses at Shrewsbury College where they will be of huge benefit to the students, but we have wider plans for them as well.
“First of all we plan to use them across the college in tutorials and enrichment events so that all students can see how important prenatal lifestyle is.
“The dolls get across a very powerful message and this is something that will benefit all students.
“The next step after that will be to start taking them into schools so that we can explain this very important message to pupils.”
Three of the babies show the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs, while the “shaken baby” has a transparent skull through which flashing red lights show exactly where injuries occur in the brain of a baby that is shaken.
