Seven people have been made honorary freemen of Oswestry borough.

The civic award is given to people whom borough council members agree have given “eminent service” to the area.

The recipients received their awards from borough mayor Betty Gull in the Council Chamber yesterday. They are the last to receive the awards as the borough council is being merged into the new Shropshire Council.

Among the freemen are Wagih El Masry, consultant surgeon at the Ort- hopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, and Colin Powell, of Walford Road, Oswestry, who spent 25 years managing the Oswestry Talking Newspaper.

Also honoured were Joan Vernon, of St Martins; John Neave, of The Racecourse, Oswestry; Lawrence Burton, of Hengoed; Philip Morris, of Whittington, and William Pumford, of Trefonen.
