Peter Vaughan backs theatre group

Margaret Simmons with Wem amdram memoriesShropshire-born actor Peter Vaughan, most famously known for his role as “Grouty” in classic comedy show Porridge, has pledged his support to the county theatre group which his aunt founded 90 years ago.

Wem Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society is celebrating the landmark anniversary and Mr Vaughan, who was born in Wem and whose aunt Irene Ohm founded the group in 1919, has written a letter congratulating members.

The 85-year-old has also made a generous donation to the society.

Margaret Simmons, secretary of the society, said: “It is so exciting to receive a letter from Peter in such an important year for the society.”
