Man attacked and robbed

Meole Brace retail parkA man was attacked and robbed by two youths in Shrewsbury as he walked home in the early hours of today. The victim suffered serious facial injuries.

Police said the attack happened between about 2am and 2.30am.

The man, in his late 20s, had been walking along Hereford Road, past the Meole Brace Retail Park, having been to the BP garage to buy some food. As he approached the island at the entrance to the park, two youths came over and struck up a conversation.

They assaulted the victim, who was then chased towards McDonald’s and punched to the ground.He was then kicked numerous times to the head and body and an amount of money was stolen.

The man managed to make his way to a friend’s house in Meole Brace and an ambulance and the police were called.

Acting Detective Sergeant Russ Teece said the man suffered serious facial injuries and was treated at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital before being released this morning.

“The victim had withdrawn money from the cashpoint at Sainsbury’s, before walking to the BP garage to get some food,” he said.

“As he walked back along Hereford Road, he was approached and attacked by two youths in their teens and wearing dark clothing, possibly with hats on.”

He urged anyone who saw the attack or the offenders in the area at the time of the incident to call police on 0300 333 3000.

CCTV from the area is being examined by officers and house to house inquiries carried out. At least two vehicles are believed to have driven along Hereford Road at the time the robbery took place and police urged the occupants to call them.
