dave-goodfieldUp-and-coming hockey star Dave Goodfield has been called up to the England under-16 squad for the forthcoming Four Nations tournament in Spain, writes SEAN WOZENCROFT.

The Wellington 15-year-old will fly out with the 18-strong squad to play matches against European giants Germany, Holland and Spain in April.

The call-up comes after impressive performances against Gibraltar under-19s and their senior squad during warm weather training last month.

It is the first step towards a full international cap for forward Goodfield, who plays for Telford & Wrekin in the Conference North.

“It’s fantastic that he has been given this chance to play against the top youngsters in Europe,” said proud dad Gwyn Goodfield.

“He’s received fantastic support from Telford this season and his experience in the first team has been very helpful.”

The Charlton School pupil will be joined in Seville by his parents and grandparents.

He has previously represented Wales at under-16 level but is now committed to England with his eyes already fixed on a 2016 Olympic appearance.
