bucks_logo23A learning centre at a Shropshire football ground could double in size under £1.9 million proposals. Work could start at the end of the season if the plans for AFC Telford United are given the go-ahead.

Telford & Wrekin Council’s environment and regeneration department has submitted plans for the extension at the Bucks Head ground in Watling Street.

Council officials said it would coat about £1.9 million and would see the building doubled in size.

About £19 million has been ploughed into the development of the Learning Community with £1.5 million coming from the council and rest from external contributions.

The extension would help support a variety of local and community organisations, including health promotion and information, social inclusion programmes and supporting local businesses.

It would also allow the current successful projects for children and young people to be expanded.

Council leader Andrew Eade said: “The partnership between the council, the football club and Telford Sports Learning & Enterprise Community has been very successful and of great benefit to the local community. If planning permission is granted it will allow our partners to build on this success and help grow even more activities at the centre.”

Councillor Gary Davies, ward member, welcomed the proposal, adding: “The AFC Learning Centre has already enabled the delivery of some fantastic community and social inclusion programmes involving children and young people.”

Lee Carter, AFC chairman, said: “It is a fantastic development which will enhance the work we do within the community and with young people.”
