Baby boy for Paralympian champ

Thursday 26th February 2009, 2:29PM GMT.

debbie-brennan1Shropshire Paralympian Debbie Brennan was today celebrating her finest achievement – giving birth to a baby boy.

Her little bundle of joy, Jacob Bryn, weighed just 4lbs 4oz after an emergency Caesarean operation last night.

Debbie’s mum said it was as good as winning Olympic gold.

Jacob is being kept in an incubator for the time being but has already demonstrated a fine set of lungs and is perfectly healthy, said Debbie’s proud mother Marie Brennan, of Randlay, Telford.

Marie and husband Keith are rushing off to Germany tonight to see Debbie and their first grandchild.

Wheelchair athlete Debbie, 29, married Telford soldier Blake Johnson in March 2007 at Wellington Register Office.

She now lives in military quarters near Paderborn in Germany where 25-year-old Blake is serving with the Royal Engineers.

Debbie, who has cerebral palsy, was educated at Lord Silkin School, Stirchley, and won four medals, including a gold, at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics.

Her racing career came to an end after the London Marathon in 2007 when she had a bad crash, breaking her nose.

Marie said: “Since then, she’s been trying to start a family but has suffered two miscarriages.

“She was 33 weeks into her third pregnancy when her waters burst yesterday and was taken into a civilian hospital for an emergency Caesarean at 8pm.

“Little Jacob is just lovely. Debbie told us she is feeling a bit sore and is dying to hold her baby.”
