Decision over town traders
Wednesday 25th February 2009, 11:37AM GMT.
Two men who were arrested after they allegedly broke into an empty Shrewsbury store and set up shop over Christmas and into the New Year will not face police action.
But trading standards investigations will continue into the incident, which saw the men allegedly trading illegally in Pride Hill.
The men were arrested on suspicion of burglary after the Credit Crunch Clearance store was opened in the former Card Warehouse.
Police said they had received reports the empty shop had been broken into and trading was taking place without the owner’s permission.
The Trading Standards department at Shropshire County Council was called in to look at the stock that was being sold in the store.
Today Maria Hawkaluk, a spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “The alleged incident has been investigated and no further police action will be taken against the two men.
“Shropshire Trading Standards continues to investigate the incident.”
The store was selling jewellery, watches, perfume, scarfs and other items. No official sign was ever put up at the outlet, with only a red banner carrying the Credit Crunch Clearance name.
