Town boss aims to bolster midfield

Shrewsbury Town chief Paul Simpson will attempt to freshen up his squad for the promotion run-in ahead of this weekend’s trip to Macclesfield.

Simpson today confirmed he is hoping to tie up a deal for a loan midfielder, with a view to him playing some part in tomorrow’s home reserve team fixture against Sheffield United if the move comes to fruition.

And the Town boss may also use that game to run his eye over two mystery trialists, who are both free agents.

“I think we have got ability in the squad but I’m conscious of the fact that we are coming into a little mini-season and we may just need to freshen things up,” said the Town boss.

“We have had a few disappointments and it’s important we do what we can to make sure we finish the season strongly.

“We need a big push and some fresh faces can help to bring some impetus. The chairman is prepared to back me so hopefully we can get something to happen.”

Meanwhile, Simpson has urged his side to become more ruthless in front of goal after seeing a host of chances go begging against Chester and Luton.

“In two games we have created close to 20 chances and only scored twice so we need to be more clinical,” he added.

Town’s strike options could be aided this week by the return of Nick Chadwick, who is expected to return to training today.

Dave Hibbert (foot), however, remains around a week away from resuming full training.
