Stranded pair rescued from beach
Monday 23rd February 2009, 12:00PM GMT.
Coastguards were called to rescue two teenagers from Shropshire stranded on a Welsh beach after their car got stuck in sand.
The two 18-year-olds, from near Bridgnorth, got cut off by the rising tide after their car became stuck on Ynyslas beach, Borth, on Saturday.
Their grey Renault Clio had become lodged within the sand and after trying to rev the car out the men were forced to call for help.
The teenagers said they had been in the car for three hours before making the call at 10.45pm.
Coastguards were called out and were able push the car out of the sand within half an hour.
Kate John, Milford Haven Coastguard spokeswoman, said: “The two lads had been trying for a while to get out and had got themselves stuck.
“We managed to help the lads quickly without any trouble but people do need to be made aware that there is a massive tidal range in the area and so it can come in very quickly.”
George Crumpler, coastguards assistant district officer, said drivers going to the beach should keep an eye on the tide and ask for help if they get stuck.
Mr Crumpler said visitors to the beach should check the tidal conditions before they arrive, and to go to the car park visitor centre to ask for help before calling the coastguard.

grim: Well thats just what I would have done – always carry a pump for such occasions, as well as a winch, rope and chains.
I have rescued two people from sand as it happens buy placing a rock under the jack, jacking up, and filling the hole with rocks.
It amazed me how these people just reved the car until it dug itself down so low the sump was in the sand, at which pint even a 4×4 will struggle to get out of sand.
The moment you loose traction, you need to back off the throttle, but the common mistake is to drive “harder” and dig in. If yiou can’t get grip with a little throttle you certainly won’t get any more with more throttle!
I don’t know if they were scared, just seems like they had no idea – but I’m sure they are wiser for the experience.

Dave, its like this. The moment you loose traction on sand, stop reving – all it will do is dig you in and make matters alot worse. Its like trying to drive up a 45 degree hill as well as get out of sand when you dig in!
If you had let your tyres down and doubled the area in contact with the sand, you would have effectively halfed the weight of the car, prevented sinking in and double your traction.
One problem is people don’t let the tyres down enough. A couple died in Austrailia because they got stuck even though the let the tyre down a little. When the police recovered the vehicle, they let the tyres down much more and recovered it no problem.
But once you where dug in, I’m not surprised that a 4×4 struggled.
Luckily it was Wales and not the outback.
