Was chippy explosion deliberate?
Monday 23rd February 2009, 3:30PM GMT.
Police investigating an explosion and fire at a Shropshire chip shop today said it could have been started deliberately.
Detectives investigating the blast at Broseley Chippy said it was being treated as of “doubtful origin”.
The takeaway in High Street, Broseley, exploded shortly after 2am on Thursday, sending the door and shattered glass flying 60ft across the road.
Detectives also said they had initially feared people may have been inside the chip shop as the fire took hold. But Detective Inspector Mick Homden, of Shrewsbury CID, said officers had contacted everyone connected with the business and everyone was safe and well.
Residents, who feared a “bomb” had gone off, had said they thought a man sometimes slept at the premises.
The chippy is owned by Parmajit Sandhu and his wife Manjit, known to customers as Mandy, from The Rock, Telford.
Mr Homden urged anyone in the area between about 10pm on Wednesday and just after 2am on Thursday to call CID on 0300 333 3000.
