Fans banned after fracas
Monday 23rd February 2009, 8:00PM GMT.
Three Telford men have been banned indefinitely from matches at AFC Telford United following a disturbance at the Bucks Head.
The home supporters were ejected from the ground during Saturday’s FA Trophy clash against Southport.
One Southport fan was also thrown out for making threats towards a Telford player and his family. Police today confirmed they were called to the Wellington ground shortly after the final whistle.
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “We were called to reports of public disorder on Saturday at about 5pm, which had dispersed before we arrived.
“While we were there we escorted fans’ coaches on to the M54 to ensure no further disturbances took place.”
A club statement today said: “The club has spoken to West Mercia Police and will co-operate fully, including gathering together and passing on CCTV footage of the incidents.”

Having been at the match and also having witnessed the incidents first hand I have to say that I did not see one Telford fan involved who looked over the age of 18 (in fact most were easily under 16 and a few of them were girls) so I am puzzled as to who these 3 men are?
While I accept that these ‘kids’ were probably looking for trouble I can also categorically say that the trouble was started by a small group (5-6) of Southport fans in their late teens/early 20′s who were aggressive towards me as they walked from their end of the ground past the White House Hotel towards the departing Telford Fans. The Southport fans had the obvious intention of goading the 2,000 or so Telford fans, most of who (with the exception of a dozen teenagers) completely ignored them.
I am guessing that the only reason that this got news coverage was that the police response (with blue flashing lights and sirens) was a little over the top, but in their defence I suppose they really had no idea what to expect when they arrived at the Bucks Head? Quite honestly I have seen far worse trouble than this in Telford Shopping Centre and what I actually saw looked really quite comical!
As a Telford supporter I find this kind of sensationalist reporting by the Shropshire Star to be quite offensive. On the rare occasions that action needs to be taken it is taken immediately thanks to our excellent board of committed trust members.
So to reiterate – Telford is a supporters club – we do NOT have a hooligan problem at the Bucks Head.
