Was skewer death accidental?
Saturday 21st February 2009, 6:00PM GMT.
An 80-year-old man thought to have been murdered with a barbecue skewer may have inflicted his injuries accidentally after suffering a stroke, detectives said today.
But the Shropshire son of Leslie Ince said he was keeping an open mind until he had heard the coroner’s verdict but was looking for closure.
It was initially believed Mr Ince, from Walsall, West Midlands, had been attacked by an intruder when he was found at his home in February 2007.
But officers now say the pensioner, who died in hospital in April 2007, may have injured himself in a tragic accident at his house on St Ives Road.
An inquest on Mr Ince is set to take place at the coroner’s court in Dudley, West Midlands, on March 26.
His son, Peter Ince, who lives near Much Wenlock, today said: “We have been looking for a kind of closure and I hope that a majority of the family’s questions will be answered so we can all agree with the police’s opinion that it was a tragic accident.”
Detective Superintendent Matt Ward, of West Midlands Police, said the investigation team had reached its conclusions after receiving advice from a number of experts, including those specialising in unusual injuries.
