Urgent repairs for monument

The damaged Captain Webb memorialA monument to one of Shropshire’s most famous sons which was damaged when it was hit by a lorry is to be taken away for urgent repairs next week.

The Captain Webb memorial in High Street, Dawley, Telford, will be removed for urgent repairs on Wednesday.

The memorial to Captain Matthew Webb, the first man to swim the English Channel, was damaged when a delivery lorry hit it  earlier this week. 

Telford & Wrekin Council is overseeing the specialist repairs to the landmark that are needed following the accident. 

On Wednesday, the stone memorial will be removed by crane and then taken away for specialist repairs. 

Councillor Miles Hosken, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This is an important landmark of which local people are rightly very proud. 

“With 2009 also the centenary of the monument’s installation, we all want to the see the damage repaired and the monument restored and back in Dawley’s High Street as quickly as possibly.”

    I now live in the US, but I am always telling people about Captain Webb. I hope the monument will be repaired quickly and returned to it’s location. Dawley wouldn’t be the same without it. We need as many positive things around us in life, to make up for the bad. GO DAWLEY!!
