Saturday 21st February 2009, 4:00PM GMT.

Nicola Jamie who died after developing a blood clotTributes have been paid to a pregnant Shropshire headteacher, who was found dead at home.

Nicola Jamie, known by her colleagues as Nikki, was discovered at the top of the stairs at her home in Telford by her husband Bill.

She was a teacher at the Martin Wilson School in Shrewsbury from 1997 and became its head two years ago.

Today a spokesman for the school and its governors said everybody was “greatly saddened” by her death.

He said: “Nikki was a creative and passionate educationalist, who had children at the centre of all she did.

“She has been a teacher at the school since 1997 before becoming headteacher two years ago.

“She was dedicated to improving the opportunities for all children.

“As an Early Years specialist, she set up a ground-breaking early years facility at the school that received many awards.”

Liz Nicholson, director of children and young people’s services for Shropshire County Council, also today paid tribute.

She said: “Our thoughts are with Nicola’s family and friends at this time. Both myself and colleagues are saddened by this tragic news.

“Nicola was a talented, dedicated and well respected headteacher.”

Mrs Jamie died on February 12. A post-mortem examination revealed she died of a pulmonary embolism due to deep vein thrombosis.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
