Town set for fourth park and ride?
Saturday 21st February 2009, 11:58AM GMT.
A fourth park and ride site could be developed in Shrewsbury to cope with the expected growth in the town’s population in the long term, as part of a major transport review.
Highways chiefs admit they need to review transport issues in order to cope with new challenges posed by the creation of an extra 8,200 homes in the town by 2016.
Planning permission already exists for land near Emstrey Business Park to be turned into a park and ride hub.
But Phil Crossland, assistant director strategic highways and transportation for Shropshire Council, warned any plans for the site were unlikely to happen in the short term.
He said the authority was currently working on an integrated transport strategy for the town which would tackle issues from 2011 onwards.
Mr Crossland said: “We have had a site allocated planning permission for a number of years at Emstrey. In reality it’s unlikely to happen in the short to medium term because it is unlikely there is enough demand for a fourth site. We will be reviewing it as part of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Strategy.”
He added: “The piece of land near the business park will be reserved as a possible fourth site.”
