Town graffiti crackdown

Vandals have plagued Telford with graffiti – just days after council chiefs spent thousands of pounds cleaning the area.
Operation Mayflower was launched by police after vandals daubed bridges, walls, bus shelters and lampposts with their “tags”, after council chiefs spent thousands of pounds removing the old graffiti.
As part of the huge crackdown on the graffiti-related anti-social behaviour in Leegomery, police arrested a 19-year-old man and six male youths aged between 12 and 15, all from the Leegomery area, on Tuesday.
Police said the arrests came after they had seen a boom in the amount of street furniture covered with graffiti “tags”.
Sergeant Becky Harper, from the north Telford local policing team, said: “The graffiti has been impacting negatively on local residents for a number of months and we are determined to improve the situation and rid the area of these problems. I would warn any individuals involved we will have no hesitation in prosecuting them if we can connect them to the incidents.”
Six of those arrested have been bailed pending further inquiries while one, a 15-year-old, has been released without charge.
