Ostrich killed on county road

Saturday 21st February 2009, 2:15PM GMT.

An ostrich was killed after it escaped from a farm and was run over on a Shropshire road.

Police were called to the the A49, close to the Sheet Road roundabout, on Saturday at about 1.30pm.

A West Mercia Police control room spokeswoman said: “The ostrich came out of nowhere and collided with a vehicle. Minor damage was caused to the car, but sadly the ostrich died.

“It is believed the ostrich came from a local farm or residential property.

“The road wasn’t blocked and the ostrich was moved to the side of the road.”

She said police were attempting to find out who the ostrich had belonged to.

“We are making inquiries with local farms and residents,” she said.

I know it’s an unusual, an ostrich, and I do feel sorry for the bird.

    But really – ‘BREAKING NEWS’?!

I can see the headline in Monday’s paper: “COUNTY OSTRICH IN ROAD TRAGEDY”………

“The large flightless bird was spotted” – very unusual, they are usually black. Perhaps it was an emu?

I bet who hit that thought it was a dam big pheasant. I wonder if the insurance company will question the claim?.
