Mick’s message to Wolves fans

Saturday 21st February 2009, 11:45AM GMT.

Mick McCarthyWolves boss Mick McCarthy has called on the fans to help ease the tension around Molineux as they look to get their stalled promotion bid back on track tomorrow at home to Cardiff.

Wolves’ hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League have been undermined by a barren run of form that has seen them win just one of their last nine Championship games.

Despite that poor return McCarthy’s side remain at the top of the table, albeit with a three-point lead over Birmingham who have a game in hand.

It is a far less comfortable position than Wolves found themselves in at Christmas, when they were seven points clear, leading McCarthy to admit his side were showing signs of nerves.

But the former Republic of Ireland boss believes they can restore the feel-good factor at Molineux provided the club, and the fans, show a united front.

“The fans’ role is vital tomorrow as it has certainly been a bit nervy and there is a bit of tension flying around,” he said.

“We all expect that, but we all want the same things, we all want success and to be promoted.

“There might be a lack of confidence and a lack of great performances at the minute, but there’s no lack of effort.

“And I always expect people to be supportive of players putting in effort anyway.”
