County’s Oscar hopes

Saturday 21st February 2009, 8:59PM GMT.

Shropshire Star readers want to see a double dose of British success the Oscars, judging by the results of our latest internet poll.

For the past three weeks, we have been asking county film fans to tell us who they think will scoop the top prizes at this year’s Academy Awards, which get under way in Hollywood tomorrow night.

And they were in agreement with our film critic Carl Jones, who predicted a best film award for Slumdog Millionaire, and a long-awaited best actress prize for Kate Winslet, long before today’s alleged internet leak.

The Oscars is the last of the “big three” movie awards ceremonies this year, following the Golden Globes and the Baftas.

A total of 59 per cent of Star readers expect Danny Boyle’s heart-warming rags-to-riches tale Slumdog Millionaire to make it a hat-trick of successes by taking the coveted best film trophy, while 68 per cent are plumping for Winslet to achieve a similar trio of triumphs as best actress, for her touching portrayal of a woman with a dark past in The Reader.

In the best actor category, veteran Mickey Rourke is tipped to win by a third of readers for his physical and emotional performance in The Wrestler, ahead of second favourite Brad Pitt, with 24 per cent of the vote.

The late Heath Ledger is seen by 64 per cent of readers as the front runner for best supporting actor, for his chilling role as The Joker in the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight.

The only one of the main categories in which readers disagreed with our film critic is best supporting actress – 40 per cent are tipping Taraji P Henson for her performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, while Carl has put his hat on Penelope Cruz for her role in Woody Allen’s latest drama Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Two Brits are battling for the best director prize – Carl expects Slumdog’s Danny Boyle to triumph over The Reader’s director Stephen Daldry.
