Town out to blow away travel blues
Friday 20th February 2009, 1:30PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town chief Paul Simpson has backed his team to dispel their away-day jitters at lowly Luton Town tomorrow.
While denying that Town’s dismal form on the road is down to any deep-rooted psychological problem, Simpson admitted that the final 10 weeks of the season are always a nervy time.
“It’s always a nervous time for the players and management, but you start to realise that being nervous doesn’t help,” he said.
“We need to be clear about what we want and go out to achieve it.
“We have made mistakes away from home this season – and we nearly made mistakes on Tuesday also – but we go in with confidence and really sure about what we desire.”
Town have been struck by injuries to two front-line strikers for their trip to bottom-of-the-pile Luton.
Dave Hibbert is definitely out for two weeks after hurting his foot in Tuesday night’s scrappy 1-0 win over Chester.
It is unclear whether it is a bone or ligament problem, but any pressure is causing discomfort at the moment.
Nick Chadwick is also a major doubt with a twisted knee, though it is hoped that the former Everton man will pull through.
Stricken
Midweek goal hero Richard Walker is in contention for a first start in threes while Michael Symes could be in line for a place on the bench.
Right-back Darren Moss is still suspended after seeing red at Bournemouth while Kevin McIntyre is still out.
The financially-stricken Hatters received a huge boost this week with progression to the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with victory over League One Brighton.
Simpson added: “They are going to be flying. It’s a massive Wembley game for them to look forward to and I’m sure that it will be the highlight of a very difficult season for them.
“Even without the 30 points deduction they would still be involved in a relegation scrap and we have to make sure that we start winning against these teams at the bottom.”
