Final waymarker waiting for museum

Ron Iremonger, chairman of the Mount Residents Group; Ian Price, staff resources manager at Royal Mail in Shrewsbury and Glenn Lawes, chairman of the Mount Residents association, with the waymaker to go outside the birthplace of Charles DarwinA lone waymarker due to be part of Shrewsbury’s Charles Darwin trail will be put into storage until a multi-million pound project to turn the scientist’s birthplace into a museum is complete.

The final waymarker in a series marking significant sites in the life of Darwin was presented to Glen Lawes, chairman of the Darwin Birthplace Society, by Shrewsbury Royal Mail, which has sponsored the project.

Mr Lawes said they would now be pushing to raise the money needed to set up the museum.

The building is currently owned by the Government but the society is hoping to raise enough money to buy the lease on the building and open up a museum – and then the waymarker will be set in place.

“We’ve raised enough funds to do all the design studies and plans and to prepare a business case for funding bids,” he said.

“We shall need to raise at least several million pounds to purchase the lease and do work to preserve the building and create the museum.”

Ron Iremonger, chairman of The Mount residents’ association, said he was delighted to have the waymarker even if it was not set in place yet.

He said: “I think it’s wonderful that we’re having a waymarker here at The Mount to celebrate this very special year.”
