Agreement to freeze council tax
Friday 20th February 2009, 11:05AM GMT.
Shropshire councillors overseeing the county’s switch to unitary status have backed plans for a council tax freeze.
The proposed budget was carried forward by the Conservatives.
The Tory members of the implementation executive committee proposed no tax increases in the Shropshire Council’s 2009/10 budget.
But though there is cross-party support for the tax freeze, opposition members abstained from voting on the overall budget.
The Lib Dems and Labour put amendments which were defeated.
The proposed budget will now be recommended to next Friday’s meeting of the full county council which will make the final decision as the “continuing” authority under the unitary shake-up.
Commending the budget Malcolm Pate, the executive’s Tory chairman, said that savings being made from the unitary move now stood at £14m, and £7m would be invested in services.
He called for support for what he described as “this wonderful Conservative budget” of zero council tax rises.
But Labour leader Alan Mosley said it was not perfect. Lib Dem leader Peter Phillips warned there were “large areas of neglect” within the budget.

wonder how much more could have been cut in the taxes, without loss of services, if the huge payouts to top staff hadnt taken place. council tax may remain the same this year, but watch the space…
